Radiative corrections to the Casimir energy and effective field theory

چکیده
We discuss radiative corrections to the Casimir effect from an effective field theory point of view. It is an improvement and more complete version of a previous discussion by Kong and Ravndal. By writing down the most general effective Lagrangian respecting the symmetries and the boundary conditions, we are able to reproduce earlier results of Bordag, Robaschik and Wieczorek calculated in full QED. They obtained the correction E (1) 0 = π α/2560mL to the Casimir energy. We find that this leading correction is due to surface terms in the effective theory, which we attribute to having dominant fluctuations localized on the plates. PACS numbers: 12.20.Ds, 03.70.+k

Radiative corrections to the Casimir force and effective field theories
Radiative corrections to the Casimir force between two parallel plates are considered in both scalar field theory of one massless and one massive field and in QED. Full calculations are contrasted with calculations based on employing “boundary-free” effective field theories. The difference between two previous results on QED radiative corrections to the Casimir force between two parallel plates...
متن کاملProblems with the Casimir Vacuum Energy
A critical look is taken at the calculation of the Casimir effect. The boundary conditions play an important role and should be imposed in a physical way. An acceptable result for the vacuum energy is only obtained when different regularization schemes yield the same result. Radiative corrections to the Casimir force between two parallel plates due to electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations have be...
متن کاملCasimir effects of nano objects in fluctuating scalar and electromagnetic fields: Thermodynamic investigating
Casimir entropy is an important aspect of casimir effect and at the nanoscale is visible. In this paper, we employ the path integral method to obtain a general relation for casimir entropy and internal energy of arbitrary shaped objects in the presence of two, three and four dimension scalar fields and the electromagnetic field. For this purpose, using Lagrangian and based on a perturb...
متن کاملRadiative corrections to the Casimir effect for the massive scalar field
In 1948 Casimir predicted an unexpected quantum field theory (QFT) effect: as a consequence of distorting the vacuum of the quantized electromagnetic field, two conducting and neutral parallel plates should attract each other with a force proportional to the inverse of the fourth power of their separation [1] (for general reviews on the Casimir effect, see Refs. [2]; for an introductory guide, ...
متن کاملGround State Energy for Massive Fields and Renormalisation
We discuss the renormalisation of the ground state energy of massive fields obeying boundary conditions, i.e., of the Casimir effect, and emphasise the role of the mass for its understanding. This is an extended abstract of a talk given at the topical group meeting on Casimir Forces at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics on March 15-29, 1998. Renormalisation is a key to the understa...
